I don’t really care about this show, or about this guy’s opinions- he has a right to think whatever he wants. His views on the gay issue don’t surprise me at all; I grew up being taught those same ideas. He’s a product of the 60’s in more ways than he thinks… But this issue is too big to not share my thoughts.
It bothers me when people use their fame to promote incorrect information to their fans like this (see photo). All you have to do is look through history and the world today to see that his statement about countries needing Jesus to not murder each other is completely ridiculous and very misleading.
* Hitler used Christianity to promote his views (many Nazis thought they were Christians. If you read his speeches this is painfully obvious.)
* Most atheist countries are doing better than most religious countries, with crime rates setting record lows, Sweden being one of them.
* Muslims are doing basically what Christians did in the Middle Ages. Christian history is rife with violence and abuse of people who didn’t believe like them.
Say what you want- but please don’t spread false information!
Some people think that his suspension is an attack on free speech. Free speech does not mean freedom from consequence- A&E has the right to decide whether they want to continue to employ someone who publicly states things that are offensive to their gay viewers. You don’t say “fuck you” to your boss and then cry “freedom of speech!” when he fires you. You have the freedom to say what you want- but sometimes there’s consequences for what you say. Saying that gay people are going to start having sex with animals and that they’re like slanderers and drunkards? Yup, there’s consequences for saying stuff like that when you’re a public figure whose boss needs good public opinion to make money.
Here’s the infamous quote that got him suspended:
“Everything is blurred on what’s right and what’s wrong. Sin becomes fine,” Robertson told GQ’s Drew Magary about immorality. “Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men … Don’t be deceived. Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”
